The inf luence of a l loy ing s u b s t i t u t i o n s from the 3d,4d and 5d t r a n s i t i o n s e r i e s on the thermal -s tab i l i t i es of Fe-, N i and Co-based m e t a l l i c g lasses containing 10 a t . % S i and 12 at.%B g l a s s formers has been systematical ly inves t iga ted . The changes a r e in te rpre ted i n terms of variat i o n s i n (s+d) e lec t ron concentrat ion and of the s i z e d i f fe rence between solvent and s o l u t e metals. The e f f e c t of changes i n metal loid r a t i o s on the s t a b i l i t i e s and formation of NiSiB a l l o y s is a l s o reported. PassivityÐthe key to our metals-based civilization*

Humankind has been able to develop a metals-based civilization primarily because the reactive metals (Fe, Ni, Cr, Al, Ti, Zr, . . .) exhibit extraordinary kinetic stabilities in oxidizing environments. From the time of Schonbein and Faraday (1830s), the reason for this stability has been attributed to the existence of a thin reaction product ®lm on the metal (or alloy) surface. This ®lm effecti...

Influence of PEG Stoichiometry on Structure-Tuned Formation of Self-Assembled Submicron Nickel Particles

Self-assembled submicron nickel particles were successfully synthesized via the one-step surfactant-assisted solvothermal method. The impact of surfactant and reducing agent stoichiometry is investigated in this manuscript. Different morphologies and structures of Ni particles, including flower-like nanoflakes, hydrangea-like structures, chain structures, sphere-like structures, and hollow stru...

Stability Constants of Mixed Ligand Complexes of Nickel(II) with Adenine and Some Amino Acids

Nickel is one of the essential trace elements found in biological systems. It is mostly found in nickel-based enzymes as an essential cofactor. It forms coordination complexes with amino acids within enzymes. Nickel is also present in nucleic acids, though its function in DNA or RNA is still not clearly understood. In this study, complex formation tendencies of Ni(II) with adenine and certain L...

Potentiometric and Thermodynamic Studies of Binary and Ternary Transition Metal(II) Complexes of Imidazole-4-acetic Acid and Some Bio-relevant Ligands

Proton–ligand association constants of imidazole-4-acetic acid (IMA) were determined potentiometrically in aqueous solution at different temperatures in the range 15–35 C. The stepwise stability constants of IMA with some selected bivalent transition metal ions were also determined in 0.1 mol dm NaNO3. The stability of the complexes follows the trend Cu [ Ni [ Co [ Mn, which is in agreement wit...

Ab initio density functional study of phase stability and noncollinear magnetism in Mn

The crystalline and magnetic structures of all known polymorphs of Mn have been investigated using generalized spin-density functional theory based on an unconstrained vector-field description of the magnetization density. We find that at atomic volumes smaller than 12 Å3, the magnetic ground state of α-Mn is collinear with magnetic moments ranging between 0 and 3 μB depending on the local symm...
